Why is there mobile internet but no ordinary one?

4G works through a mobile network, not the city's cable system, so it is available everywhere. However, during power outages or technical malfunctions, the regular wired internet may stop working, as switches, routers and other equipment need electricity to operate.

Mobile internet without power continues to work through the use of base stations, without the need for a local power supply. This can be an advantage in situations where traditional internet from a provider is unavailable. However, when there is a high demand on the mobile network, for example, when there is no power during a long blackout, many people use mobile internet. This can lead to network overload and, as a result, a decrease in the quality or instability of the mobile signal. 

Here are some tips from us if the mobile internet is not working well

1. Switch to 3G/2G mode: this will reduce your consumption and make it easier to break through the flow of users. The Internet will be slower, but it will work.

2. Use national roaming. For example, if Kyivstar's connection is down, you can switch to another operator's network and try to connect. You can do this in the settings if you disable automatic connection to the mobile network.

Can the ordinary Internet work without power?

If you have a twisted-pair connection, you can use the Internet without power. But there are several details and it depends exclusively on the provider.

At some addresses, the provider's equipment may have a backup power supply. In this case, even if you don't have electricity, you only need to power up your router to get the Internet working. 

*Note that in the event of a prolonged power outage (for example, during a complete blackout), the Internet may stop working because the batteries will be completely discharged.

However, GPON technology is the best solution to ensure a stable internet during a power outage.

How to stay connected when there is no power and mobile internet

GPON connection technology allows you to use the Internet when the power is cut off. Everything works thanks to a passive optical network that allows you to maintain an Internet connection even during a power outage.

GPON provides high speed and reliability of data transmission using an optical cable that directly connects the provider and the ONU terminal installed at the subscriber's residence. All that is required in the blackout is to connect the router and the optical terminal to an uninterruptible power supply.

How to connect the router and optical terminal to the backup power supply?

1. To power the optical terminal, you need to provide a 12V 0.5A power supply. 

Information about the router power supply can be found on the router label, in the specifications, or on the manufacturer's website. 

2. You need to purchase an adapter cable. It depends on how you will power the terminal or router: 

• if from a power bank, it can be a USB to DC cable
• if from UPS/mini UPS, then it can be a DC to DC cable
• if it is a rechargeable battery, the adapter can be a "crocodile" to DC connector 

Please note that the DC connector may differ depending on the router: each router has a different plug form factor. For details, check the router manufacturer's website.

 3. Use the cables to connect the ONU and the router to the backup power supply.

If you have a charging station or a battery with an inverter, you need to connect the power supply to an extension cord that is connected to the UPS.
