Band Steering or Smart Connect technologies: what is it and how to connect it?
to read 7 minBand Steering (also known as Smart Connect) is a technology that allows you to connect two Wi-Fi networks in one router. The range can be 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. This technology is present in MikroTik, TP-Link routers (they can be found on our website in the “Equipment” section), as well as in Keenetic and UniFi. This is about the name Band Steering. Asus routers and some TP-Link use the phrase Smart Connect.
What is Band Steering for?
Wireless gadgets that have the ability to operate in the 5 GHz band and support 802.11ac should be used in such configurations. Why is it necessary? Considering that the 5 GHz band increases the data transfer rate for Wi-Fi adapters, you will be able to download the necessary files, Internet tabs, and more faster. If smart connection is enabled, the router will be able to automatically distribute gadgets connected to it by range.
You will not need to choose which devices to connect to the 2.4 GHz frequency and which to 5 GHz, the router will do it for you.
Operation modes Smart Connect or Band Steering
The function parameters in different routers are identical:
- by default - the distribution of gadgets at the discretion of the router;
- advantage of 5 GHz - be the first to connect devices that support the 5 GHz band;
- advantage of 2.4 GHz - automatically connect gadgets operating at a frequency of 2.4 GHz;
- do not use - disable smart connect technology.
When configuring, you can specify any of the listed commands. Often in new models of routers, the “default” function is set in the selection menu. So if you need to change the settings, do it yourself.
How to set up Smart Connect on an ASUS router?
In the router settings you need:
1. Go to the “Wireless network” menu;
2. In the Smart Connect field, press the toggle switch to the ON position;
You can also make more detailed settings in the same menu.
3. Next to the toggle switch, click on “Smart Connect Rule”.
Please note that if you do not know the intricacies of professional settings, it is better not to change the set parameters.
How to set up Smart Connect on a TP-Link router?
Setting up a smart connection is as follows:
1. Go to the router settings;
2. Then click on “Advanced settings” and “Wireless”;
3. In the Smart Connect block, click on the “Enable” checkbox.
After the completed steps, you need to create a single network name and password.
It is important to understand that this innovation can only work on Wi-Fi adapters that support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
Drawing conclusions, it can be noted that Band Steering or Smart Connect technology provides development and wide opportunities for using devices in a single network. If you have questions, write in the comments!
